Area Info

The seaside town of Galle is 116 Km. from Colombo by road or rail down the southwest coast. Both routes are picturesque following the coastline closely for much of the way.

Todays town has grown greatly and spreads into the hinterland but the Fort is the slowbeating heart of Galles history. The walled city has stood since the early sixteenth century through the Colonial periods of the Portuguese Dutch and British and in our present times is proclaimed as an Archaeological Reserve and been identified as a living World Heritage Site.

The etymology of the name Galle is explained as probably a corruption of the Sinhalese gala a cattle fold or postingplace from which the Portuguese named it PointdeGalle. The simpler and more popular theory is found in the similarity of the Sinhalese word gala for rock which the Portuguese duplicated by adopting the Latin word gallus for rooster. They thus designed the coatofarms of the city as that of a rooster standing upon a rocky perch.

The Portuguese took Galle from the Sinhala kings in 1587 and erected the first fortifications a single wall fronted by a moat which extended from the sea to the harbor. The Dutch landed in 1640 with 12 ships and 2000 men under the command of Wilhelm Jacobsz Coster who defeated the Portuguese after severe fighting and a fourday siege.

The Dutch later converted the Portuguese fortalezza into a single bastion which they named Zwart Bastion and built a formidable line of defence ringing the walled town by ten bastions which endure to this day. Akersloot Bastion is named after the birthplace of Coster the Dutch commander who captured Galle. The name has been chiselled on a stone at the spot and also bears a date which however has no bearing on the date of erection of the Bastion. The grim old walls are a favourite promenade for Galles citizens and its visitors alike.

Through the rolling streams of Time and Change Galle still retains as few other towns in Sri Lankaan atmosphere of the past. The town was graced with considerable civic amenities and military features. Two hundred years ago there was introduced a stormwater drainage system which prevented flooding in the Fort so sophisticated as to have great bricklined underground drains which were automatically flushed twice a day by the tide.

Despite recent facelifts and new facades to many of the houses and the introduction of modern civic amenities like electricity telephone systems water and drainage services the streets remain narrow and many are known by their original names such as LeynBaan street Zeeberg street and Moderabaay street. A peep into the old houses reveal them to be spacious and airy with large ornamental doors and windows pillared verandahs and cool inner courtyards and gardens.

Restaurants (Eat and Drink)

RESTAURANT & BAR
Stepping down into our sunken courtyard is where the heart and soul of Fortaleza lies. A beautiful blend of classic Dutch architecture meets a soft touch of Sri Lankan timber. a gathering point for many, this is where our restaurant and bar really takes shape. With our head chef Arun is at the helm producing the perfect array and food using only the best local ingredients. Our food can be matched with anyone one of our elaborate cocktails or a glass of wine from our varied wine list.

In the open courtyard, umbrella-shaded tables are surrounded by large pots of fresh basil and other herbs. Banana trees with outsized fruit, palms and a spectacular bougainvillea line the entrance from Church Cross Street.

In the day, the restaurant is a quiet, cool oasis for a relaxed breakfast, lunch or simply an ice-cold drink or snack away from the heat and bustle of the streets. In the evening, it is transformed into a magical place, with spot-lit tropical foliage, fairy-lights, and the spectacular backdrop of the coral wall. A gathering point for many, there is plenty of space to accommodate up to 50 guests seated at private dining or communal tables. With prior notice large dinner groups and private functions can be arranged.

We also pride ourselves on having the best music in the Fort. As one of our guests put it; we have “the coolest tunes on the island”.

OUR FOOD
We use the very best quality, fresh ingredients sourced from the local area. We buy our fruit, vegetables and salad leaf in the local market, our meats are all locally reared and all our fish and seafood are caught by local fishermen.

Our menu has been designed to bring you that little touch of home while enjoying the vast culture that is Sri Lanka.

We maintain hints of Asian flavours however into a western style menu. our main aim is to ensure that when dining with us whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner that we leave you not only satisfied but also with a pleasant homely reminder.
