In the beginning Deniyaya was out station of the parish of Elpitiya.The Rev.Fr. Van Austen S J. Parish Priest of Elpitiya was coming all the way from Elpitiya to Deniyaya. To cater to the spiritual needs of Catholics of Deniyaya. In the person of Chevalier Rajapakse of Deniyaya Fr. Van Austen found a friend and in 1923 with the very generous material help given by the chevalier Fr. Van Austen built the Deniyaya church the present Parish church of Deniyaya. Until this Church was built Fr. Van Austen held the present Goonatillake bungalow.
In the course of time St Matthews College and the R.C.S.School were established for the education of the youth in Deniyaya.
In 1993 Deniyaya was separated from Elpitiya as a parish and Fr.van Austen Was appointed Parish Priest. He was a firstclass pioneer missionary. With his transparent amiability nevertiring the popular of Deniyaya. The education of many was piloted by him this day people remember his with gratitude.
In 1943 the Rev.Fr. Jayewardene succeeded Fr van Austen as the Parish Priest of Deniyaya

He too was popular among the people and was successful in converting many Tamils. During his time the Deniyaya Convent was inaugurated. Fr.D.P.Weeratunga was the Assistant of consolidate the work that had already been done in the parish.
In 1948 the Rev.Fr.Weeratung a was appointed Parish Priest or Deniyaya. The work that was done so far by two Priests in the Parish came on his isolated shoulders. He concentrated more in the town area and on the two schools his attention while trying to cater to the outstations through his Catechists. He improved the mission House built the bungalow occupied by the Principal and ran a boarding for the boys in the mission House.
In 1959 Fr.Moses Perera Senior was sent to Deniyaya as Parish Priest. Was sent to Deniyaya as saved Anninkande. With help forthcoming from the Tamil teachers who had been already mobilized by Fr.weeratunga Fr.Moses invaded the Estates .Among these lay cooperators special mention must be made of Mr. Constance. Fr.Moses baptized 102 people and blessed

19 marriages.Fr.Moses is supposed to have asked for an Assistant Who was given to Deniyaya after Fr.Moses left Deniyaya.
In 1961 Fr.Benedict Silvatook charges of the Parish of Deniyaya. With the takeover of our schools the catholic situation from our two schools was a deadly blow to the Parish. The Parish was decimated overnight. There was no Longer any catholic social pressure in Deniyaya town area. It was into this atmosphere that Fr.Benedict Silva set foot. He gave a liturgical consciousness to the Parish repaired the halfneglected Mission House and planted area of the church property with tea. For some time Fr.Henry weeraratne helped Fr Benedict Silva as Assistant and was transferred to Balangoda. The Tamil Catholics suffered since there was no catechist in Tamil. In 1964 April Fr.Ciampa came to Deniyaya as Assistant. He engaged a Catechist who is doing satisfactory work.
In 1964 November Fr .W.A.Lanza came to Deniyaya as acting Parish Priest. In 1965 Fr.Ciampa. Built the Anninkande chapel and the Tamil community of the area is marking good use of the spiritual assistance given by Fr.Ciampa. The Convent is giving and is ready to give all reasonable help in our apostolate.
